Philips PET740/05 7" Portable DVD Player

Philips PET740/05This portable 7" DVD player, from Philips, has just had £45 chopped off the price and would appear to be a real bargain. But there's no point buying a cut-price portable DVD if it's no good. So does the Philips PET740 deliver? And what are you getting for your money?

The PET 740 has a rather sexy look to it, with a sleek, modern aluminium case. Not the most important aspect, but we've found there's a lot of clumsy, chunky players around. This one looks great. But is the picture any good?

The display here is a 7" LCD TFT screen, the same one used in Philips earlier models. This isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, the 7" TFT used in the PET series of players has received universal praise. The colours are rich and the display looks sharp and bright. You won't find anything amiss with this screen. It looks top notch. The player PET 740 is also shock-proof, so no annoying skips, jumps and crashes when on the move.

What else? You'll get around 2 hours per charge, the battery being a built in rechargeable job. But you also get a car adapter. It has all the controls you'd expect and they're a lot easier to use than some other players. We could harp on about all the formats this player can handle - suffice to say you'll not find a movie you can't play. From DivX, MPEG4 to VCD. It does the lot.

The verdict? Philips PET740/05 is a very impressive player. You certainly get your money's worth. Great picture, great sound. Buy it.

Sony DVPFX720W 7" Portable DVD Player Review

Sony DVPFX720WThe great thing about buying Sony is that you know the product is going to be of the highest quality. And the Sony DVPFX720W follows suit with a robost design, light weight and a battery life that leaves other players behind.

This portable DVD is suitable for in-car use and comes with a fully car rechargeable lithium ion Polymer battery that gives a very impressive 5 (and a bit...) hours battery life. The highest recorded was just over 5 and a half hours. That's enough to watch a couple of good length movies and then some!

The Sony DVPFX720W will play anything you can throw at it in the form of DVDs, recordable DVDs, all manner of CDs, MP3s and my personal favourite - DivX. This lets you watch computer type movies easily on your player. Another thing we really liked about this unit is that it's got a USB port. Personally I prefer to put TV shows and movies on my USB stick these days. This lets me watch them without burning any DVDs.

The picture on this in-car DVD player is simply gorgeous, with Sony's trademarked image quality offering rich colours and clear images, no matter how much action is being thrown at it. Likewise, the audio quality is also very good, whether you're listening through the built in stereo speakers or the dual headphone socket. The remote you get with this player is also a lot better quality than you'll find on other units.

The list price is currently just over £100. And this is a great player for parents or kids alike.

Polaroid 10" Single Screen DVD Player

"A top notch in-car DVD for under £90"

Polariod 10inch in-car dvd player

With the UK economy in the doldrums, it's more important than ever to hunt out those bargains. And Polaroid's 10" in-car DVD player fits the bill perfectly at a wallet-friendly < £90. Oh, it's also a very good quality player.

The screen offers 480 x 600 resolution and the player uses both shock proof memory and ESP to ensure that the picture looks great, even when the car is in motion.

The kit includes a car mount but the player is ideal to take anywhere with you too. The controls are easy to access, just below the screen and a remote controll is included too. You'll get a very respectable 2.5 hours out of one charge. And there's an in-car charger included.
