August DA110BD

August DA110BDIf you've not heard of the August DA110BD, it's a portable 11" entertainment system that plays DVDs, freeview TV, music, digital radio and pretty much anything else you can think of. It has a high quality LCD screen and a heck of a lot going for it, including some very impressive awards.

This freeview tablet DVD player has a high resolution 800 x 600 LCD screen that's one of it's most talked about features. The detail level is incredible. The August DA110BD receives all current freeview channels (40+) through it's built in antenna, and also has an input for an ariel.

As well as TV, you can play DVDs. The August DA110BD is a region free player, so you can play discs from anywhere in the world. It supports any kind of media you could want to play, including DVDs you've burned, VCDs, and photo discs. There's a USB port for DivX and other movies, and an SD port to show your photos off.

Channel 4 voted this player as a top small screen TV. It also received a What H-Fi Magazine award, an ERT weekly award, and a 5 star Amazon users rating. You get a great range of accessories with the August DA110BD (pictured) and this player is ideal for around the home, in car use, and carvans.

Sony DVP-FX720

Sony DVPFX720

The Sony DVP-FX720 (in Pink!) is a stylish little portable DVD player with a lot of excellent features, and all the quality you'd expect from a Sony player.

The DVP-FX720 offers true 16:9 widescreen and movies look noticeably better on this 7" LCD screen than on cheaper models. There are other differences too. The size and weight is in a league of it's own. And the sound is far better.

One of the best things about this portable dvd is you'll get a full 5 hours playback from the rechargeable battery. There's also USB port - which saves burning movies to DVD, and can handle DivX and MP3. And the DVP-FX720 has twin headphone jacks, so you can share a movie on those long journeys.

There's a lot of cheap portable DVD players on the market at the moment but if you want a quality build, and some great features, take a look at the Sony DVP-FX720. This stylish little player has a lot to offer for a little extra investment.

Philips PET740/05 7" Portable DVD Player

Philips PET740/05This portable 7" DVD player, from Philips, has just had £45 chopped off the price and would appear to be a real bargain. But there's no point buying a cut-price portable DVD if it's no good. So does the Philips PET740 deliver? And what are you getting for your money?

The PET 740 has a rather sexy look to it, with a sleek, modern aluminium case. Not the most important aspect, but we've found there's a lot of clumsy, chunky players around. This one looks great. But is the picture any good?

The display here is a 7" LCD TFT screen, the same one used in Philips earlier models. This isn't a bad thing. On the contrary, the 7" TFT used in the PET series of players has received universal praise. The colours are rich and the display looks sharp and bright. You won't find anything amiss with this screen. It looks top notch. The player PET 740 is also shock-proof, so no annoying skips, jumps and crashes when on the move.

What else? You'll get around 2 hours per charge, the battery being a built in rechargeable job. But you also get a car adapter. It has all the controls you'd expect and they're a lot easier to use than some other players. We could harp on about all the formats this player can handle - suffice to say you'll not find a movie you can't play. From DivX, MPEG4 to VCD. It does the lot.

The verdict? Philips PET740/05 is a very impressive player. You certainly get your money's worth. Great picture, great sound. Buy it.

Kenwood KVT-522DVD

Kenwood KVT-522DVDEvery now and then you get an in-dash DVD player that really makes you go all gooey inside. And The Kenwood KVT-522DVD has certainly been giving us a warm, happy feeling. This motorized in-car DVD player has a simply obscene amount of features. But is it any good, and should you buy one for your motor?

So, what do you need to know about Kenwood's rather sleek looking Kenwood KVT-522DVD? Well it's got a 7" touchscreen with a cool graphical interface that's a joy to use. You can access the Tuner, DVD, USB port, iPod, Bluetooth, TV and all the other gadget wizardry this player is capable of from here.

It's got the chick-pulling Z-action open and close mechanism that's guaranteed to make anyone go 'ooooo!' when they see the monitor sliding out. The screen has tilt angle so you can find the perfect spot for laid back viewing. And it's got back and forth position control.

The screen here is a 7" widescreen monitor that's of the highest quality, offering those rich blacks and super-crisp images that you won't find on cheaper players. It really does feel like you've got a large scale TV on your dash when you're sitting watching the Kenwood KVT-522DVD.

One of the things that really stands out is the built in satnav GPS on this player. I mean this really isn't an add on, this is a top-notch GPS navigator and at a much larger screen size than you'd get on even a top of the range dedicated sat nav. We were very impressed with this and it's so easy to use too. You'll never get lost on those country roads again.

In short, the Kenwood KVT-522DVD really is a top of the range, luxury incar DVD player. We can't recommend this one enough. Get one of these in your car and you'll never look back.

Philips PET712/05

Philips PET712/05

If there's one thing that incar dvd systems like to convince you of is that their products are 'easy to fit'. So we were sceptical when we investigated the Philips PET712/05 player as the twin 7" screens come with quick-attach headrest pouches.

The idea is you fit the headrest attachments (no screws required) and then the screens slot into these and can be viewed by your passengers - aka the kids. The Philips PET712/05 system works very well and the screens are easy to slide in and out.  This twin screen player has had some really positive feedback on the forums and in reviews too.

So what about the screens? No use being easy to fit if they're naff. You're getting 2x 7" TFT screens at a resolution of 480 x 234. And the quality is very good. That's at a 16:9 screen ratio. They have built in speakers and headphones with individual volume controls.

Controls wise, everything you need to get the latest flick on screen is on the top of the player and is very straight forward. Children won't have any problems using the Philips PET712/05 DVD player.

The only thing left to decide is who gets to pick which film is going on first, and what happens if you've got 3 children!? But this is a great little DVD system for anyone who wants a fast and cheap way to get twin screens in the back of their motor.

Mustek Viewfun PD77 Dual Screen DVD Player Review

It's fun to share. Well, unless you're watching movies - then it's much more fun to have your own screen. The Viewfun PF77 offers two in-car DVD screens that play the exact same image on both screens.

It's a great way to share movies and tunes on long journeys. And it's definitely suitable for kids, as the screens are well made and the buttons all feel sturdy.

This car DVD kit comes with everything you'll need to mount the players on the back of any car seat, thanks to the universal mounts. So this is ideal if you want something that you can take with you and to keep the little ones from asking 'are we there yet?' and punching each other. There's even two headphone jacks for extra quiet in the back.

The PD77 will play any disks you throw at it - regular DVDs, CDs and any kind of recordable DVD. And it will play your DivX movies too. There's no battery so the player won't need charging, and comes with both a car adapter and a mains adapter.

We'd recommend this one for families and the price tag makes it budget friendly. This niftly little in-car player will set you back around the £130 mark. Which is pretty good considering there's an extra screen included. Both sound and quality are very respectable so definitely check this one out if you're looking for a cheap car DVD player that delivery great quality.

Sony DVPFX720W 7" Portable DVD Player Review

Sony DVPFX720WThe great thing about buying Sony is that you know the product is going to be of the highest quality. And the Sony DVPFX720W follows suit with a robost design, light weight and a battery life that leaves other players behind.

This portable DVD is suitable for in-car use and comes with a fully car rechargeable lithium ion Polymer battery that gives a very impressive 5 (and a bit...) hours battery life. The highest recorded was just over 5 and a half hours. That's enough to watch a couple of good length movies and then some!

The Sony DVPFX720W will play anything you can throw at it in the form of DVDs, recordable DVDs, all manner of CDs, MP3s and my personal favourite - DivX. This lets you watch computer type movies easily on your player. Another thing we really liked about this unit is that it's got a USB port. Personally I prefer to put TV shows and movies on my USB stick these days. This lets me watch them without burning any DVDs.

The picture on this in-car DVD player is simply gorgeous, with Sony's trademarked image quality offering rich colours and clear images, no matter how much action is being thrown at it. Likewise, the audio quality is also very good, whether you're listening through the built in stereo speakers or the dual headphone socket. The remote you get with this player is also a lot better quality than you'll find on other units.

The list price is currently just over £100. And this is a great player for parents or kids alike.

DVD Systems At Amazon

Posted in Buying Help

If you're in the market for a new in-car DVD player then you could do a lot worse than heading over to Amazon. I spent some time today looking at what they have and was pretty surprised at their range. They've got Mjustek, Nextbase, Warfdale, Goodmans, Philips, Sony and a lot of other leading brands.

Amazon seem to do just about anything these days and the best part from my perspective is the customer reviews. One of the hard parts about buying online is that you can't believe the hype. And those Amazon users really let you know if there's a fault or a problem with a product.

They also keep their prices competitive and the shipping and returns are really good. I buy a lot of gear from Amazon. Well worth adding to your list of places to check out if you're buying a new media player for your car soon.
